Car manufacturers and Air Conditioning Specialists recommend that your car’s air conditioning is checked annually and that a full car air con service is carried out every two years to keep it running efficiently. As drivers are making full use of their air conditioning systems and using them more frequently, even in the winter months, it is important to keep your system well maintained for greater efficiency and to prevent costly repairs in the future. Here’s a guide to the signs that you should look out for which can indicate that your car’s air conditioning is in need of a service.

System Is Blowing Out Warm Air

If your air conditioning is blowing out warm or tepid air and is not cooling as it should, this could be an indication that your system is running low on refrigerant and is need of a recharge. An air conditioning specialist will use gauges to measure the gas pressure in your vehicle. They may also need to perform a complete evacuation of the existing gas and recharge the entire system. Warm air can also mean a leak in the hose or connector.

Bad Smells

An unpleasant, musty smell in the cabin can indicate mould and bacteria contamination in the air con system. An air conditioning specialist will need to perform a mould-bacterial removal treatment during the air conditioning service.

Unusual Sounds

Rattling and banging sounds when the air conditioning is on can indicate a worn out fan belt or condenser.

Noises can also mean that debris is clogging up the system and that the dryer-receiver filters are blocked or broken.

Other signs are:

  • Liquid pooling under the dashboard
  • You can’t hear the fan engaging when the air con is switched on
  • It takes longer for cold air to arrive

Whats in a Service?

During a full service your air conditioning specialist will conduct the following:

  • Measure the amount of pressure in the system
  • Test for leaks
  • Full check of system components
  • Drain the refrigerant
  • Vacuum clean the system
  • Use a specialised dye to detect oil and gas leaks
  • Repair any leaks and re-gas the system

Your specialist will then discuss with you any further repairs or replacements that need to be done.
